3 Mosquito Repellant Plants you Can Grow in your Garden
Nobody loves to be
awake all night because of mosquito disturbances. Usually, you get annoyed,
frustrated, and disturbed, especially when you have a business to attend to
early in the morning. As you figure out what to do, the clock continues to tick, and mosquitoes, too, are not in the mood of leaving you soon. What
will you do? I guess you lack an idea apart from buying mosquito repellant
soaps or waiting to contract malaria and visit the hospital. The good news is
that there are mosquito repellant plants that you can easily grow and tender in
your garden without spending much like in maize or vegetable farming. These
plants perform by producing a natural scent that keeps irritating mosquitoes
and releases a wonderful fragrance in the garden or room.
3 Mosquito Repellant Plants
1. Marigold
Like
its sweet name, Marigold is easy to grow and it is an annual herb that produces
a fragrance that repels mosquitoes and leaves your garden or room with a
wonderful scent. Marigold can be grown in pots and placed near doorways,
verandah, or in the living area, or directly planted in the backyard. Apart from its miraculous ability to keep
away mosquitoes, Marigold also prevent your garden from an attack by aphids,
whiteflies, squash bugs, thrips, tomato hornworms, and Mexican bean beetles.
These capabilities make Marigold a suitable herb for your farm borders and
horticultural garden.
2. Lavender
Have
you ever thought about why insects and animals like rabbits have never
destroyed your lavender? It is argued that they release a lovely smell that
comes from the oils found in their leaves. And, if you are an herb enthusiast,
then there is no reason why you should not have this plant in your backyard or
garden unless you do not like the fragrance it produces. Lavender is drought resistant and tough once
rooted, and it only requires sunlight and good drainage to protect you from mosquitoes.
Lavender discharges oil and scent that hinders mosquitoes from breathing, which
makes them to avoid areas it has grown.
3. Rosemary
Coming
from two common names Rose and Mary, Rosemary is one of the most known herbs,
and because of their woody fragrance, they prevent mosquitoes, including
cabbage moths and carrot flies. Rosemary is even endorsed by the PlantShed and
New York Botanical Garden as an ideal plant to have in the garden. The plant
contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that help boost your
immune system and blood flow when consumed. Importantly, Rosemary can withstand
harsh climatic conditions like those in arid and semi-arid lands and performs
well in containers, making it suitable for winter places.
Conclusion
Mosquito repellant herbs don't need a bigger space since they can be grown in containers or bags, have low water consumption rates, and are pest and disease resistant. You can easily introduce them in areas spent by guests, like in the living room or near doorways. However, it is advisable to have adequate ventilation when sleeping with plants in your room because they tend to discharge carbon dioxide at night, which is harmful and can cause death. Now that you have the knowledge, you cannot miss to have one of these magical plants in your garden.
